A video has been circulating the internet the past couple days exposing Cate Blanchett in a very awkward interview as she calls out her interviewer for the ridiculousness of a question. But, the negative connotation associated with her freak-out is only shown through the 19-second cut of the one particular question. When you see the entirety of the interview, what actually happened, and what may have prompted Blanchett to react in such a way becomes a bit more clear. Take a look:
From the start, this interview’s awkwardness is what makes it so darn hilarious to watch. What was supposed to be a nice chat about a Disney movie turned it to a quick-witted banter battle between Cate Blanchett and Channel Ten journalist for The Project Jonathan Hyla. The two joked about sex, dating, vodka and why the children’s movie, Cinderella wasn’t rated R. But as the two bickered back and forth, the interview ended on an uncomfortable note when Hyla tried to get ‘serious’. This is the moment everyone’s been talking about. Because this is the moment that Cate Blanchett, seemingly bombarded by an off-topic question (especially when taken out of context of the interview) snaps, and swears on national television.
Referring to the Russian Blue cat that Blanchett’s character (the wicked stepmother) keeps in the film, Hyla asks the Oscar-winning actress:
Blanchett’s face changes. Whether or not it is a joke reaction, she looks to what may be her publicist in shock and confusion, and fires back at the journalist:
Based on the context of the question, we can’t be sure if Blanchett is just playing along with the sarcastic overtone throughout the entire interview, or if she really was pissed off that this silly question was Hyla’s attempt at ‘serious’. Just moments later the discussion wraps up as Blanchett snarkily ends with a “nice to meet you?”
After the interview, Hyla instagrammed the segment of the interview with the comment:
But when media erupted about the actress ‘losing it’ in the interview, Hyla made sure to clarify what really happened by providing the entire, uncut interview for “those misrepresenting [his] #CateBlanchett interview”.
