Thanks to a series of court cases and Tom Brady's lingering 4-game suspension, Deflategate just won't go away . And because it won't go away, it's gotten to the point where pretty much every sports fan has an opinion on it, including major celebrities. Recently, an A-lister got really vocal about NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell, the whole deflategate controversy and sports politics in general. Ben Affleck was appearing on Bill Simmons' new HBO series Any Given Wednesday when he went off about the whole Deflategate controversy. As it's HBO, a proliferation of f-bombs are involved and is thus NSFW. Give it a watch, below.
Ben Affleck has always come off as a pretty well-reasoned guy, and it's clear he's passionate about the NFL and especially the Patriots. Affleck, along with his buddy Matt Damon and fellow Patriots fan John Krasinski have all been on Jimmy Kimmel before defending Tom Brady and denouncing the NFL's decision, but it seems the actor didn't want to stop there.
Deflategate is the ultimate fucking bullshit outrage of sports, ever. It's so fucking stupid that I can't believe... you realize that they gave him a suspension for a quarter of the regular season which would be the equivalent of suspending a baseball player for forty fucking days---which is what they do when you get busted taking steroids.
There are a lot of side components to this rant, including how steroid use is prominent and yet the NFL is obsessed with taking down Tom Brady a peg or two because he wouldn't yield his cell phone to the giant corporate entity. However, the f-bomb laced rant is at least pretty entertaining, mostly because Bill Simmons continues to egg Ben Affleck on by bringing up the 8% differentiation between the ball and how the legality of the issue is now more about Roger Goodell protecting his right to "do whatever he wants."
The nearly five-minute rant also closes with a mention of domestic violence issues in the community, which is pretty classic commentary about the NFL, but hits home regardless.
We haven't done anything to address this crisis in domestic violence in the NFL, but the fucking football better not be 8% lighter, and if we find out it is, you're gone for four games!
Suffice to say, he seems pretty wound up, but that's great publicity for Bill Simmons, who just got Any Given Sunday__off of the ground this week on HBO. You can catch new episodes on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET, only on HBO.
