Supergirl Has Brought In Another Superman Veteran
The majority of Supergirl plots so far have been original, but the show has found ways to include references to other DC Comics adaptations. In fact, Supergirl often casts superhero veterans to tackle new roles as a nod to fans everywhere. Thanks to the casting of a certain actress, Supergirl will soon feature a big nod to a past Superman TV series. Teri Hatcher of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman fame has signed on to play a major character in the second half of Season 2.
Teri Hatcher is set to appear in multiple episodes of the second half of Supergirl Season 2. Few details are currently available, but we do know that she won't exactly be a friend to Kara and Co. Hatcher will play a shady character who goes on to become the big bad of Season 2, according to TVLine. The news likely comes as a surprise for any of us who were counting on Lillian Luthor to retain her status as the season's top evil mastermind. Teri Hatcher's character will evidently be even more dastardly than the alien-hating head of Cadmus.
Given that Kara has had a hard enough time trying to battle Cadmus in Season 2, we can bet that an even worse villain will require the efforts of all the superheroes that National City has to offer. Kara has struggled with the idea of working with Mon-El and Guardian on a regular basis, and the two guys have hardly gotten along in the field so far. Teri Hatcher's character may be nefarious enough force an alliance between all three.
Teri Hatcher is best known on the superhero circuit for her role as Lois on all four seasons of ABC's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. The show was a new variation on the Superman story as it put as much focus on the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane as it did on the exploits of the Man of Steel. Lois & Clark ran from 1993 - 1997, and Hatcher became the iconic version of Lois Lane for a generation of TV fans.
Of course, it sounds like Teri Hatcher's Supergirl character will be a far cry from Lois Lane. Still, Hatcher won't be the only Superman veteran to play an entirely new type of character for Supergirl. Hatcher's Lois & Clark co-star Dean Cain already pops in from time to time as Jeremiah Danvers, and former Supergirl movie star Helen Slater turns up every once in a while as Eliza Danvers. Even the lesser-known Laura Vandervoort of Smallville fame has appeared on Supergirl, playing the villainess Indigo.
We can't say much about how Teri Hatcher will fit into the cast just yet. Personally, I have to hope that she'll share at least one scene with Dean Cain. I'm not sure what will have to happen for the big bad of Season 2 to interact with Jeremiah Danvers, but we can't have the former Lois and Clark on the same show without a mini Lois & Clark reunion.
You can catch new episodes of Supergirl on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for the latest in superhero news, and don't forget to check out our midseason TV premiere schedule.
