Yes, The Umbrella Academy's Season 1 Ending Was Surprising Even To The Cast

Diego In The Umbrella Academy Season 1 on Netflix

Spoilers for Netflix’s superpowered series can be found throughout this article. So, if you haven’t watched or even if you haven’t finished the series yet, we suggest checking out one of our other wonderful articles.

At one point during The Umbrella Academy’s ambitious Season 1 finale, it seemed difficult to believe a second season could happen, given the way the story was trending. Luckily, the show had been peppering in delicious time travel moments since it kicked off and The Umbrella Academy safely pushed its heroes back to being teenagers as the world was officially ending in the present.

Although Season 2 has not been greenlighted by Netflix yet, the end was certainly a memorable one. If it surprised you, you aren’t alone. In fact, The Umbrella Academy’s own David Castañeda revealed in a recent interview he really has no idea what’s going on with The Umbrella Academy’s ending either. He said:

You know what, I’m as lost as you guys are at that moment. Because, obviously, when we were shooting the last episode [showrunner] Steve Blackman didn’t even give us the last page of what was gonna happen until pretty much the day we shot it. So even till now, he doesn’t reply to any of my messages that I’ve been trying to ask him what’s going on. He doesn’t want to talk to me right now. [Laughs]. So who knows?

So, David Castañeda is saying that showrunner Steve Blackman is and was previously keeping ideas for the superpower series under wraps, even from the cast. In fact, he even went so far as to make the last page of the script unavailable until right before the ensemble cast shot the scene. Even now, Castañeda doesn’t seem to know what’s in store for a potential Season 2, according to what he told The Wrap.

Either that or there’s always the possibility he’s extremely clever and just not telling us!

Although Netflix doesn’t really release viewer numbers (at least most of the time) for its original series, The Umbrella Academy has been perceived as popular. In fact, according to outside analytics a few weeks ago, it was the most popular original on the streaming service. If that’s true, it will likely get a second season on the subscription streaming service.

Now, we just need to wait for Netflix to greenlight the project for another season, which will hopefully happen sooner rather than later. It was ballsy to end on a cliffhanger like that before the show knew whether or not it would find viewership on the streaming service, but now that we’re here, I’m excited and hopeful we’ll get to see what comes next. Especially if it means the pre-teen actors end up having a larger role.

For now, take a look at what is heading to Netflix with our full streaming schedule or stay tuned to find out what the subscription streaming service has planned next!
