Longtime MythBusters host Adam Savage has been accused of sexual assault by his sister, Miranda Pacchiana, who came forward to allege that her older brother had sexually assaulted her for years when they were children. Now, following Pacchiana filing a lawsuit against her brother, Savage himself has responded to the allegations.
Adam Savage denied his sister's claim in a statement from his lawyer (via Variety), saying:
While I hope that my sister gets the help she needs to find peace, this needs to end. For many years, she has relentlessly and falsely attacked me and other members of my family to anyone who will listen. By spreading numerous untrue stories about us in pursuit of a financial bonanza, she has tortured our entire family and estranged herself from all of us. I will fight this groundless and offensive lawsuit and work to put this to rest once and for all.
According to Adam Savage, his sister has "relentlessly and falsely attacked" him over a span of many years, and he intends to fight the "groundless and offensive lawsuit." Karen Savage, mother of Adam Savage and Miranda Pacchiana, also shared a statement via the lawyer in which she stated that she supports her son "completely," and that her daughter "suffers from severe mental health challenges," adding that it's "devastating" that Pacchiana is putting the "entire family" through the allegations and lawsuit.
Miranda Pacchiana made her allegations public in a post on her blog, called The Second Wound, on June 30. In the post, she stated that the New York Child Victims Act, which extends the statute of limitations for child sexual abuse, made the lawsuit possible, and that she hopes the lawsuit will "demonstrate to my fellow survivors that we do not deserve to carry the shame of sexual abuse and assault."
Miranda Pacchiana also went into detail on her allegations that Adam Savage is now denying on her blog post, claiming that the abuse started when she was seven-years-old and continued for several years, causing her to deal with periods of depression and almost constant anxiety over the decades that followed. Pacchiana also claimed that she last made contact will Savage more than 20 years ago. She concluded her post with an explanation for why she has brought the lawsuit against her brother:
That is why I’m here today. The public needs to know that Adam Savage sexually abused me when I was a child, as set forth in the lawsuit that I have finally been able to bring after all of these years. As a survivor and advocate for victims, I am determined to shine a light on the truth. Thank you.
Adam Savage went on to host a new series, called Savage Builds, which debuted on the Science Channel in June 2019. The show has run for one season so far. As for whether or not the allegations of sexual abuse from Miranda Pacchiana impact his career or how the lawsuit moves forward, only time will tell.
