With over 25 years under his pastry-belt as the owner and head baker at Carlo's Bake Shop in Hoboken, New Jersey, Buddy Valastro has pulled off some amazing cake feats that have often been showcased on the long-running reality TV show Cake Boss and its various spinoffs. Unfortunately, it might be a while before Valastro is able to work with the same kind of proficiency. The celebrity chef recently suffered a rather horrible-sounding accident that didn't involve baking, but rather bowling.
As opposed to getting his finger caught in a bowling ball or some other sitcom-esque situation, Buddy Valastro faced a horror movie scenario over the weekend when he got his right hand caught in the pinsetter. Apparently there was a known malfunction, but it had previously been far easier to correct. This time, for whatever reason, his hand got completely stuck and got compressed within the machine, and here's what Valastro's spokesperson said happened next, according to Fox News:
Unable to remove his hand, he can see a 1 1/2 inch metal rod slowly and repeatedly impale his hand three times between his ring finger and middle finger.
Not only did Buddy Valastro have to deal with the sudden and shocking pain from getting part of his hand stabbed by blunt metal, but he also had the displeasure of seeing it as it happened. Valastro's hand was reportedly stuck inside the machine for over five minutes, and he was only freed after his son took the machine apart and used a reciprocating saw to cut through the metal bar.
After that, Buddy Valastro was transported to Morristown Memorial hospital for an emergency surgery to have the piece of metal removed from his hand, as well as to keep the wound stabilized. Thankfully, the Cake Boss star made it through the surgery with his overall health and his sense of humor intact. Here's how he first spread the news to his fans via Instagram:
Fans and other chefs commented on Buddy Valastro's social media post, such as Food Network and Dancing with the Stars vet Rocco DiSpirito.
Rachel Ray also sent some love Valastro's way.
As awesome as it is that Valastro didn't suffer worse injuries, he is right-handed, so the injury is obviously less than ideal for many reasons. He's expected to go through a fairly lengthy physical therapy and rehabilitation period. But hopefully there won't be any complications, and he'll be back on Discovery Family for a new season of Cake Boss in the near-ish future. While waiting to see if that happens, head to our Fall TV 2020 premiere schedule to see what new and returning shows are on the way.
