Disney Vet Dove Cameron Talks Joining The Live-Action Powerpuff Girls, And Now I’m Pumped

Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls

A new live-action series based on Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls has been confirmed at The CW, and my “sugar, spice, and everything nice” potion-making inner child is about to lose her mind. The casting of the three powerful sisters has been stacked with two Agents of Shield actresses and a Broadway star, but the actress set to play Bubbles also has a long history with Disney. Disney vet and Descendants star Dove Cameron speaks on joining Powerpuff, and now I’m even more pumped for the pilot to drop.

As amazing as it is to hear about a piece of your childhood coming back in a new and imaginative way, it’s got to be ten times more exciting to be a big part of the project itself. In an interview with Nylon, Dove Cameron talks about her role in the announced Powerpuff Girls reboot and she sounds ecstatic - it’s a mood I’m here for. This is what she has to say about the iconic role:

I’m so excited to be in jeans and a little blue tank top and then levitate and zoom out of a window. Please. Fighting monsters? But also specifically getting to play the Powerpuff Girls. I grew up without cable and I even knew what the Powerpuff Girls were. I’m a freak for them. . . . Diablo’s vision for it is so crazy. I can’t tell you too much about it, but it is so exactly what you would want. It’s mental.

Dove Cameron, along with her Agents of Shield costar Chloe Bennet, and Yana Perrault, will portray an adult version of a Powerpuff Girl who has since retired from fighting crime. While Powerpuff is not the series from our childhood, it seems to be one that will identify with past fans who are now adults themselves.

With Dove Cameron being a past fan herself, her energy and excitement over the series is one that other viewers can relate to, and I find myself getting way more excited to hear Cameron approve of the direction the new series is going in. Recreating something so important to the image we have from our childhood is such a risky endeavor, and it’s comforting to know that a fan like Cameron is not only impressed by the new project, but is just as excited for it as her past self was for the cartoon version.

In the same interview, the actress explained she was so excited for the project that she had a hard time keeping her role under wraps. This is what Dove Cameron had to say:

After I got cast, I had to wait a week before the news came out, which was an excruciating week because I’m such a fan of the cartoon. It was so hard not to talk about it.

Now that she can talk about it, I’m really glad the actress is, because Dove Cameron has gotten me even more pumped for the reboot series. Powerpuff is still in pre-production so we’ve got some time before we see the three childhood superheroes take to the screen in live action, but it sure sounds like we’ve got a lot to look forward to. Until then, you can brush up on your cartoon knowledge of The Powerpuff Girls by streaming the cartoon on Hulu - sounds like a good excuse to relive those nostalgic Saturday morning cartoon days.
