Supergirl: Why Kara And Alex's Midseason Finale Reunion Was So Special, According To Chyler Leigh

SPOILERS ahead for the Supergirl midseason finale, “Fear Knot.”

The first half of Season 6 of Supergirl has been leading up to this. While Team Supergirl had been trying to find a way to get Supergirl out of the Phantom Zone, Kara was just trying to survive. In the end, Kara was finally reunited with her sister, Alex. Chyler Leigh, who plays Alex, shared why that reunion was such a special one, both on and off screen.

As all the characters were experiencing their worst fears and struggling to separate the real from the fake, the Phantom Zone turbulence freed the Phantom aboard the Tower ship. Kara and her father, Zor-El, made it onto the ship before a hoard of Phantoms could descend, and a massive burst of yellow sun energy allowed Kara to regain her powers. Relieved at the sight of seeing her sister again, Kara immediately ran in for a hug with Alex. Chyler Leigh told The Wrap that the scene was not only special for Alex and Kara, but for her and on-screen sister, Melissa Benoist, saying:

It was actually my first scene back with Mel. [It] was our first time seeing each other since when she came back to start filming again. It was literally our first time seeing each other since last year, since last March. It was a matter of Alex and Kara, Mel and Chyler, you pick back up where you left off, you know.

Although the episode ended right when the Danvers sisters reunited, it was still as emotional as ever. Throughout the first half of the season, Alex had been desperate to reunite with her sister once again, completely worried about Kara. Meanwhile, Kara, stuck in the Phantom Zone, had been making enemies and allies as she tried to survive and find a way out. Knowing that the scene where Alex and Kara reunite was also the first scene with Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist since March of last year, makes it all the more emotional. Since Benoist went back to filming later than everyone else due to her giving birth, the reunion was more special for her and Leigh.

Following this midseason finale and its emotional cliffhanger, Supergirl fans are in for a very long wait to see what happens next. The back half of Supergirl won’t return to The CW for a new episode until Tuesday, August 24. While that seems like a long time (three months to be exact), Superman & Lois will be returning next week to reclaim its time slot, surely keeping fans occupied until the end of the summer. Meanwhile, Stargirl will make its Season 2 debut on August 10, just a couple of weeks before Supergirl returns.

New episodes of Supergirl return Tuesday, August 24 on The CW. Find out what's premiering in the coming months with our 2021 summer TV schedule.
