Is the NCIS family expanding soon? With NCIS: Los Angeles characters Kensi Blye (Daniela Ruah) and Marty Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) getting married back in Season 10, it might be right around the time to start talking about having children. Such a new life change might not be possible for the couple, however, as the NCIS: LA showrunner pointed out there's a career-sized problem holding them back.
While Deeks’ liaison position at the LAPD was jeopardized in Season 12, he soon became an NCIS investigator, while Kensi is a Field Agent attached to the OSP. Considering they're always risking their lives for various career duties, it’s hard to imagine them finding the time and energy to start a family and raise children such a hectic environment. When the series did finally address the topic of adoption for the couple, many fans were hopeful that Kensi and Deeks would finally be able to start the family they deserve. Now allow showrunner R. Scott Gemmill to rain on that parade a little with what he told TVLine about the biggest concern behind the couple becoming parents at this point:
The reasoning makes sense, as both Deeks and Kensi would not only be “defying death” every day of their lives but working extremely long hours, regardless of where they'd be. Kensi obviously wouldn’t be able to go out in the field much during her pregnancy, and the adoption route would still mean Kensi and Deeks would both have to take time off to be with the kid, whether separately or together. We’ve seen before in shows like Criminal Minds that having a kid and balancing an authoritative government career where one can be gone for days on end and constantly be in the middle of a crossfire can take a massive toll on the rest of the family. Even more so if both parents are in roughly the same career.
Throughout the first half of Season 12 of NCIS: LA, there were legitimate concerns over Eric Christian Olsen possibly exiting the CBS procedural following Deeks losing his job as liaison between the NCIS and LAPD. While that storyline eventually wrapped up as Linda Hunt’s Hetty pulled some strings for Deeks to stick around in a new position, it’s still a very tough time to try to start a family with Kensi, no matter which direction they go. It’s possible we’ll see them finally become parents in the future, but at least for now, they’ll have to wait a little longer.
Stay tuned to hear more about NCIS: Los Angeles Season 13 when it becomes available, and stay busy with all the big shows hitting the 2021 Summer TV schedule while waiting.
