Marvel Fans Have Thoughts After Finding Out Chris Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch And More Are Not In What if? Series

Disney+ has been knocking it out of the park lately with these MCU TV shows, including WandaVision and Loki. One show in particular that is hotly anticipated by fans is the What If...? series, which will be animated and feature (you guessed it) What If-type scenarios for some of our favorite MCU characters. Cool, but upon finding out that series mainstays like Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch, and more are not going to be appearing as voices in the upcoming What If...? series, Marvel fans have some thoughts.

Robert Downey Jr.’s lack of a voice appearance did cause a stir, largely because it originally seemed like his Tony Stark would be a part of What If? when it came out. Yet perhaps fans shouldn't be shocked, as he seems to have moved on from his role as Iron Man and is looking forward to new movie opportunities. Yet, that still doesn’t mean the fans are happy about it. Fans have recently figured out that Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and even Benedict Cumberbatch will not be providing voice work for the show. Here is what one fan of Cumberbatch’s work (With the memorable handle “CUMBERPORN”) had to say on the matter:

And CUMBERPORN isn’t wrong! It’s kind of weird that Benedict Cumberbatch, who has a long list of audiobooks underneath his belt, would not be doing voice work for the animated series. It could of course be a scheduling issue, which would make perfect sense since the man is constantly working on projects. Still, it is kind of weird since he has such a background in doing audiobooks and documentaries. Others chose humor to point out what's happening with the Disney+ show.

That is pretty funny, but it doesn’t really seem to be the case. We do know that Chadwick Boseman was able to do a recording before his unfortunate passing in August of last year. We also know that many of the MCU’s actors, like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson, and Hayley Atwell, just to name a few, will be providing voice work for the show. That said, since we don’t know the entirety of what the series has to offer, it could actually end up being only half the cast if numerous side characters are in the show and recast with alternate voice actors.

One of my favorite tweets, though, comes from Depressed Nets Fan (another great handle, by the way), who came up with this interesting theory:

This would be so awesome if this was true. As a huge fan of Loki, which just ended its first season recently, I would be so down if we got a variant Captain America or Iron Man voiced by some surprise actor. I mean, how cool would that be while also tying back into the other Disney+ TV shows? I now want that idea more than ever. Still, none of these ideas are keeping Marvel fans from pleading to the a-list actors:

I’m not sure if I really want a facsimile of the original actor’s voice, but I’m all for giving other professional voice actors work. If Chris Evans and RDJ are busy or just don't want to come back for their roles, then let somebody else get a paycheck. I’m perfectly okay with that. But what do you think?
