Human Target Recap: Lockdown

This week's male damsel in distress is Martin Gleeson, computer whiz lead engineer for Cyntronix (sp?), a military contracted weapon supplier; it's also the place where he's being held hostage. He an a colleague developed a plasma cannon that fell into the wrong hands and was used in an attack on a hospital, and the American way is to secure him until he builds our side an equally powerful weapon. Heading up our side is Chance gets his action on right quick as he has to skydive and parachute down to a ledge on the roof of Cyntronix, the only spot unseen by security cameras. Head of the bad guys/our side is a man named Crease (Mitch Pileggi) and his security lady Layla. This show likes its X-Files actors. And then later we find out the real boss is Vivian, a pretty lady with a heart of stone.

Chance kicks some ass and assumes a cover as a janitor. He bullies a man's head into passing the retinal scan at the door to the room where Gleeson is kept in. Shocked, Gleeson makes a big point saying just HOW MUCH SECURITY is in there. Chance, who can't possibly know that Gleeson is being kept in a room with big windows, happens to have some explosive gel to attach to one of them. I suppose he could have done it to any walls, but it looked really convenient with his janitorial attire. A slight reflection of Chance's face is seen in the window, and technology proves no bounds as his face is soon drawn out completely.

So the plan is to jump thirty stories to the ground, but then everybody finds out things are going on, and there's wily gunplay. The element of surprise is gone so now the decision is to turn off the major alarms that are blaring all over the building. Herein lies silly thing #1, that the window gel was used at all. It's really not the first silly thing, but this show gets its fictional liberties. Martin's idea is to use the master blaster laser he's building for the company. (His passive enthusiasm in building it is because he has a Mystery Date crush on Vivian.) The laser is kept many floors down and in a completely sealed off room, dubbed "The Black Room," even though it's all white. Silly #2? Maybe. Crease calls in Vivian once Chance and Martin escape from camera footage. Visuals gone, security turns to heat scans, which Martin foresees, so they take to A.C. vents, which Crease soon figures out.

Meanwhile, Winston and Guerrero's constant surveillance turns to posing as cop and prisoner informant respectively. The point is to draw governmental attention to the goings-on at Cyntronix. Their initial plot fails, as the Burmese hospital attack was already known, but without vital information. Guerrero tells them that someone is trying to kidnap Martin, and it's confirmed.

Vivian tells Crease to do whatever it takes to find Martin, and so he calls up all the hardasses in the building. After a few obstacles, Martin and Chance make it into the room, where a poisonous gas is released at Crease's call. The big laser ends up taking out the entire building's electrical supply for a few minutes. Then there's some gunplay. Then Crease and Chance get into a close-up fight in an elevator, where Chance gets the upper hand and pumps a couple of bullets into Crease's gut. This kind of weirded me out because I'm not entirely sure these guys were all bad guys. They just wanted the weapon, which I guess makes them a bad guy, but that's pretty much how this country does things. So then the FBI gets there, initially thinking Chance was the bad guy, but Martin rats Vivian out, and they take everyone in. Which makes almost everything after Chance's initial entrance deemed needless. I'm pretty sure they could have taken out the few people waiting for them after their parachute drop, compared to the militia that came later. Whatever.

We end with Layla, who kind of has the hots for Martin, telling Winston that Chance was identified, but the background information was nil. However, when the profile was checked, an email from an unidentifiable server was sent out. Turns out Chance's old boss has a clue where he is. I'm sure this is going to lead to something huge, and how couldn't it? One day this show is going to involve huge robots with people inside, ala Power Rangers, but with much better explosions. Maybe I'm just getting used to the patterns of Human Target, but I'm really starting to enjoy it all the more, even if the bullets are blanks and the muscles are all fluff.
