TV Recap: Big Brother 10 - Week 6 Veto

In tonight’s episode of Big Brother, April who is nominated for eviction, came up with a wildly intelligent strategy for the Power of Veto competition. Win it. Or else, have her showmance-BFF Ollie win it. I can’t fault her logic in this scenario. Winning the Veto and removing herself from the block would be a genius way to avoid eviction this week.

The Veto competition was a question-comp that had less to do with the accuracy of the answers and more to do with the houseguests’ confidence in their answers. The houseguests stepped out into the backyard to find a graveyard scene. Creepy items decorated the yard, including a bed of nails, a tank with a giant snake and another tank containing cockroaches. The houseguests couldn’t see the cockroaches but they were invited to reach in through a hole in the top of the tank to feel them. I’m with Keesha on this one – no thanks. Ollie was more freaked out by the stuffed crows posted around the yard than he was by the living creepy, crawly things lurking on the set.

The six participating houseguests (Keesha, Dan, Ollie, Jerry, Renny and April) had to give answers to varying questions. In each round, a question pertaining to the items and creatures on the set was asked. Like how many cockroaches are in the tank or how long is the giant snake. They’d all read off their answers and then decide whether they want to stay with their answers or fold from the round. Of the people who “stayed,” the person with the answer closest to the correct answer won a point. Whoever’s answer was furthest from the correct one was eliminated. The first player with three points won.

So the object of the game wasn’t just to get the right answer but to also know when to fold’em and know when to hold’em. Jerry seemed to be good at answering the questions but after scoring two points, he feared getting eliminated and folded a couple of times, giving Dan the opportunity to score points. Dan wasn’t just paying attention to his own answers, he was also looking at the other contestants to try to anticipate whether they’d stay or fold. In the end, it came down to him, Ollie and Jerry. Ollie was really trying to win this Veto to save April but it was Dan who came closest in the final question, winning the Veto and breaking his streak of thrown competitions.

One might assume that by the way Jerry treated him over the last week, Dan would’ve automatically ruled out taking him off the block but this was not the case. He explored his options, talking to Jerry about the possibility of saving him with the Veto. He also had a chat with April, who casually mentioned offering Dan some of the money she won earlier in the season if he were to use the Veto to save her. She also offered him her word that she wouldn’t put him up if she got HoH this week. After Jessie’s eviction, we all know what April’s word is worth.

Dan had to factor in what using the Veto could do to his own game, should Renny decide to put one of the people he’s allied to up on the block. Renny’s proven to be somewhat of a loose cannon this week and guessing her next move is nearly impossible. So Dan went to talk to Renny, who seemed very defensive during the conversation as though Dan shouldn’t even be considering using the Veto. She told him she’d consider him a traitor (Judas?) if he did. She refused to tell Dan who she’d put up if he used the Veto and in the end, he decided not to use it, even after Jerry apologized for his Judas remark during his “please use the Veto on me” speech (convenient timing, Jerry). But Dan did mention that someone offered him money to remove them from the block, though he didn’t name names.

Filler included Dan getting his hair cut. Renny is a seriously bossy hairdresser but she did a decent job of taming the beast that was growing wild on Dan’s head. Meanwhile, Jerry occupied his time by babbling incoherently to himself. And for the first time this season, the dining room table was replaced with a smaller one. Keesha was saddened by this but Renny said the big one was a bitch to dust.

Just a couple final thoughts regarding the diary rooms. Hey, BB producers: More Memphis! The guy doesn’t talk much around the house and when he does, it mostly consists of mumbled whispers to various allies in the game. Then we see him in the diary room and he’s full of opinions, most of which are funny and totally true. So more of that would be good. Thanks. Finally, as much as I adore Dan, the guy suffers from teacher’s voice. In the diary room, he speaks as though he’s constantly trying to talk over a room full of unruly prep-school boys. Hey, Dan! You have our attention – stop yelling! Class dismissed.
