TV Recap: Ugly Betty - Betty Suarez Land

Yay! Gio came back on this week’s episode of Ugly Betty and he’s so mad his eyes are burning red. No, literally, they turn red on the show for a split second when he looks at Betty. I guess he doesn’t like living in Betty Suarez-land, as he put it. You know what? I would totally live in Betty Suarez-land as long as all of her friends are there.

Let’s start with Daniel. Poor Daniel never has a thing go his way (and it’s actually quite disheartening). This week is no different. His mother makes him visit Alexis in jail, where she’s awaiting her arraignment, and within minutes, she tells him that she’s DJ’s father. A small fistfight erupts but, mostly, Daniel’s just sad. So now what does he do? According to his lawyer, DJ’s grandparents are seeking immediate custody of their grandson. Turns out they subpoenaed all the evidence and also learned of DJ’s true paternity results. Seriously, poor Daniel.

All his anger at Alexis is quelled when the Meade’s find out that instead of being charged with a misdemeanor as originally planned. Instead, thanks to a little sexy coercion by Wilhelmina, Alexis is now going to be charged with attempted murder. So much for that whole community service sentence. Of course, the whole thing could go away if Alexis just turns over her share of the Meade empire. Don’t worry. Alexis isn’t falling for any more of Willie’s schemes. Unfortunately, Claire can’t stand to see her oldest child in jail and she strikes a deal with the devil of Betty Suarez-land. Wilhelmina and Daniel will split Alexis’ share of Meade Publications and will both serve as Editor-in-Chief of Mode. At least Daniel didn’t get pushed out, too. But it’s only a matter of time before Willie and the fabulous Mark try to fix that last little detail.

Back to Daniel’s other problems. The injunction he was seeking so the grandparents couldn’t take DJ wasn‘t granted and they have a plane ticket waiting to take him back to France. Daniel can’t stand to see his son go, though, so he gives the kid to Betty to hide for a while. She first takes him to her apartment but when a woman starts buzzing and insisting on coming up, she flees with DJ to Coney Island. When Daniel meets them, it finally slips out, inadvertently in front of DJ, that Daniel isn’t his father and he can’t legally keep him in the United States. This time I’ll say poor DJ. He just found out that not only is his mother dead but now his father is a woman. Daniel’s able to calm him down but DJ still has to go to France. Alexis, recently released from prison, is going as well to hide out so maybe DJ won’t feel so far away from the Meade side of his family.

Meanwhile, Hilda is still sneaking around with the coach but he tells her that he’s leaving his wife. He loves Hilda now and the marriage has been over for a long time. Only, the wife doesn’t seem to know that. For the past few weeks, she’s been following him and knows he’s been staying at Betty’s apartment. Now she knows he’s seeing a Suarez girl, she just has the wrong sister. She also saw him at Hilda’s so she goes to plead with Hilda to get her sister, Betty, to stop seeing her husband. I guess she’s not ready to give up on her marriage yet and she just wants a second chance. Does that really mean Hilda has to be unhappy? I mean, the coach said it best when he asked, “Don’t I have a say in this?” Really, doesn’t he? We’ll have to wait and see about that one but I hope at least one of the inhabitants of Betty Suarez-land gets a happy ending, at least for a little while.

It wasn’t a terrible week for everyone, thank God. Betty, despite Gio’s anger with her for turning him down along with her friends’ problems, actually had a good week. After a day spent trying to bribe Gio with fancy cheeses and forcing him to help her with DJ, she finally realized that most of the time, she’s being selfish even though she thinks she’s being selfless. She thought she was trying to make Gio feel better about how it ended when really; she just wanted to ease her own guilt.

This isn’t an easy revelation for our girl. She prides herself on being nice but she learns that sometimes we’re so worried about what’s happening to us that we don’t see how it affects all those around us. Not that it’s a bad thing. After all, Gio did say he would have chosen her, too, if he was in her position. He also said she broke his heart but it seems even red-eyed angry ex-semi-boyfriends can come around in Betty-Suarez-land. They may not be together (sad), but at least she’s no longer banned from his sandwich shop.

Now, if we could only get the writers to come around to a smidge of happiness for the rest of the gang.
