The Wire's Michael K. Williams And Others Reunite For A Musical Spoof Of The HBO Series

HBO's The Wire never got its shark-jumping musical episode. But now, thanks to Funny or Die, you can see what the musical version of The Wire you never asked for might have looked like. Needless to say, it's pretty disturbing, but then again, so was The Wire during some of its darker moments.

The Wire was arguably one of, if not the best original series at the pay-cable network as I'm sure many will agree, and it seems like an unlikely candidate for a musical (though stranger things have probably happened). So it seems fitting that Funny or Die should present The Wire: The Musical with Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar!), a video that spoofs the series while also creating a bizarre picture of what The Wire might look like as a musical. Also in attendance for this musical revisiting of one of HBO's most beloved original series, Sonja Sohn (Kima), Larry Gillard Jr. (D'Angelo), Andre Royo ("Bubbles") and Felicia "Snoop" Pearson.

I think it's great that the burners finally get some love here. And I especially like the NY Times quote, "I'm pretty sure David Simon doesn't know they're doing this. But if he did, he'd love it." Ha. Right…

We can laugh about the above video and the thought of a musical version of The Wire, but it sort of makes me want to revisit Oz's "Variety" episode from Season 5. You wouldn't think a prison-set drama could pull off a musical episode but, if memory serves, the Tom Fontana series actually made it work. So you never really know…
