Iron Man DVD Altered For Your Litigating Pleasure

Ok, got your thinkin’ cap on? Good. This is one of those stories that makes my head hurt but I’ll try to break it down for you in the most simple way possible. Mostly because I do ok with “simple,” it’s “complicated” that tends to throw me. The Iron Man DVD is going to be released on September 30th, but it will not be the movie you saw in theaters. That’s right, it has been……bum, ba, bum…..CENSORED!

At least that’s what we hear from the guys over at Collider. They report that a picture used in a newspaper that Tony Stark is reading (see image to the right and for a bigger shot, click over to Collider) has been replaced on the DVD release. What’s the problem with the picture? Well, that’s where it gets tricky.

The picture was originally taken by a freelance photographer during the filming. It was unauthorized; just a guy who got close enough to snap a picture. The picture was later posted on IESB.net and Paramount flipped out. They didn’t just have the picture taken down, they pulled down the whole website. Later it went back up and everyone made nice-nice.

Apparently, Jon Favreau heard about what happened and used the same picture in the newspaper Tony Stark is holding above under the headline “Who is the Iron Man?” Case closed, right? Well, not so much. It’s possible nobody ever asked (or paid) the guy who took the picture in the first place for its use in the movie. So the guy in question, Ronnie Adams, is suing Paramount and Marvel.

Still with me? Ok, so now the DVD of Iron Man will have a different picture under the caption “Who is the Iron Man?” So in the two or three seconds that picture is on screen, you won’t see what you probably don’t remember seeing in the theater in the first place. I think we’ll all live.
