Activision is looking to bring another studio into the mix for Call of Duty. During a conference call with investors, they announced a new developer called Beachhead Studios.

Unlike other COD studios such as Treyarch or Sledgehammer Games, it doesn't seem that Beachhead will actually be developing a COD game. Instead, Activision Publishing prez Mike Griffith said they'll be creating an online platform that will provide content and services for the player community. Unfortunately that's about as specific as he got, though.

"We're very excited about the increased value we can bring to the community," Griffith said (via Gamasutra). "The DLC we have planned for Call of Duty alone should have more commercial potential on its own than most standalone console games."

Downloadable content has proven to be a big seller for the COD series. The first map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops sold 1.4 million "copies" through Xbox Live in its first day. With that sort of potential at their fingertips, you can't blame Activision for trying to scoop up as much of it as possible. It remains to be seen just how Beachhead will expand COD, though.
