Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes Free Patch Opens Up Console-Exclusive Missions

It looks like Snake’s platform-exclusive missions in Metal Gear Solid V: Peace Walkers have been labeled declassified for all regions and, come May 1, will be unlocked across all platforms via a free update.

Ground Zeroes has had quite a bit of controversy surrounding it, with everything from the game’s price to the handling of certain mature content being up for discussion across the internet. Another aspect of the game that seemed to get fanboys all riled up was the existence of console-specific extra missions. While the PlayStation Crowd got to enjoy some good old-fashioned Metal Gear action in the “MGS1 Deja-Vu mission,” Xbox gamers were allowed to pay Raiden a little visit in their own “Jamais-V” mission. But it looks like everyone can play nice now, because Konami Digital Entertainment has announced that it’s making the whole shebang available across the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

In the Jamais-Vu mission, Raiden (of MGS2 and Revengeance fame) is dropped into the same prisoner camp to investigate an alleged alien invasion and must tackle the threat without the use of his beloved high-frequency blade. This particular DLC also pays homage to another Kojima game.

“The aliens--dubbed ‘Snatchers’ by the intelligence group—are externally disguised as camp guards, but produce an inhuman X-Ray when tagged using the iDroid app or Raiden’s binoculars,” reads a rundown of the mission from Konami. “Raiden must locate and eliminate the alien imposters while evading capture by the unaware humans charged with guarding the base.”

While Kojima’s new Metal Gear game certainly seems to be heading in a more serious/dramatic direction, it’s nice to know that he hasn’t completely abandoned his goofy-as-hell side. Metal Gear games are about the never-ending catastrophe of war, sure, but all of the previous games in the series offer their fair share of bonkers moments and plot points. They may be absent in MGS V proper, but it looks like the facepalm-worthy silliness could be alive and well in the form of additional missions.

The formerly Playstation-exclusive Deja-Vu mission is just as off the wall, taking players back to a time when the Snake family took its first steps into the world of 3D.

“The mission visually references key events from the original PSone classic and tasks the user with reproducing famous scenes from the original Metal Gear Solid,” says Konami. “As players recreate these iconic moments, a flashback system reproduces the original reduced polygon graphical style of the original game and introduces familiar enemies and recognizable weather conditions for added authenticity.”

No matter what console you’re playing on, the mission you formerly didn’t have access to will be yours to experience on May 1.
