Sons of Anarchy Video Game Announced

A long time ago on a digital news post far, far away, a Sons of Anarchy game was hinted at by series creator, Kurt Sutter. A lot of websites picked up the news and a lot of hoopla was made about what the game could be about and what systems it might appear on. Well, the game has officially been announced and the first few details have been made available.

Game Informer picked up the news that the new game will be called Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect. According to the article, Kurt Sutter has teamed up with Orpheus Interactive and Silverback Games to work on... a mobile title. Yes, Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect is going to be a mobile title.

The game will supposedly take place slightly outside the general circle of familiar faces from the television show, and will instead focus on a brand new set of characters and a brand new location. The Game Informer article notes that Orpheus Interactive will be working very closely with the writing team of the FX television show to help bring to life the same level of grit and intrigue that helped the series run for seven long seasons.

The details on the game seem to be sketchy at best, but one thing we do know is that it will be arriving some time next year.

It's really hard to tell what the game might be like or what genre it will fit into, as fans have oftentimes asked for something like Red Dead Redemption or something similar to Grand Theft Auto: The Lost And Damned. However, Sutter had mentioned before that if they wanted to do something on the home consoles it was going to be very expensive... and this has less to do with the tools and more to do with the licensing and platform fees that come along with a larger budget platform title. Of course, at the time of the original announcement about the game – or rather, the announcement that the game was being negotiated, it was early 2012.

Back then there were no eighth-gen consoles from Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo; there was no revamped policy, patching and concept approval addendum to help smaller and mid-budget studios get their games on home consoles. Later on in 2012 it was then announced that Sons of Anarchy would be arriving on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. However, plans to make the game never came to fruition.

Following the release of the eighth-gen consoles, Sutter made a brief update about the progress of the game, but still managed to keep the details sparse. Even now, the details are still sparse and the game is due to launch some time in 2015.

Based on the description of what's been made public, Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect sounds like it could either be an adventure game on the line of Telltale Games' point-and-click series – where story and character development obviously come first – or it could be a mixed-hybrid action-adventure tale with strong writing that hinges on story progression. I'm leaning towards the former only because it was stated that the game will have episodic content, and that fits right into the wheelhouse of the Telltale-style games.
