Roland Emmerich Wants To Make A New Stargate Trilogy
After spawning multiple television series since first being introduced in 1994, the Stargate universe looks like its heading back to the big screen. In an interview with Digital Spy, director Roland Emmerich - who both co-wrote and directed the original movie - has revealed that he has been having some serious discussions recently about rebooting the franchise.
"We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot, and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts," Emmerich told the site, seemingly implying that the new movie would not continue with the previously established continuity. "Pretty soon we'll have to look for a writer and start." Originally the filmmaker wanted to make Stargate as a trilogy of films, but says that the original starsare too old now to make that work. You can hear Emmerich talk about the franchise in the video below (skip ahead to the 44 second mark).
Emmerich appears to be at a nostalgic point in his career because this is the second franchise he's talked about continuing recently. The other, of course, is the sequel to Independence Day, which has been officially announced and is now on track to be released on July 3, 2015. Unlike Kurt Russell and James Spader, however, the stars of that original film apparently haven't gotten too old, as Bill Pullman is set to reprise his role for the new movie and Will Smith is in talks.
Part of the reason for Emmerich's return to older, established franchises may be the fact that his most recent film was a total bomb. Despite having big name stars and a prime summer release date, White House Down was one of this summer's biggest flops, making only $72 million domestically on a $150 million budget. Emmerich may just be trying to make safe moves so that he can raise his industry stock a bit.
Since the 1994 film, Stargate has launched multiple television series, direct-to-video releases and even a video game. But do you think now is the time for another movie? Watch the original's trailer below and tell us what you think in the comments.
