J.J. Abrams does not like Star Trek. If there’s a theme to Entertainment Weekly’s just published cover story on his new movie, then that’s it. Abrams talks repeatedly about his dislike for the Trek world and its characters, and the difficulty of warming up to Kirk and Spock. And if that’s not enough to shiver Trek timbers, then Abrams’ burning need to revise everything and toss all the old stuff out the window should.
But it’s not all bad in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek. He may not much like the specifics of the Star Trek world, but he does seem to love the underlying idealism and optimism of Roddenberry’s vision. That at least, seems to remain at the core of things.
EW’s story also reveals, for the first time, some real plot details. They say, “Star Trek's time-travel plot is set in motion when a Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, is attacked by a vicious Romulan (Eric Bana) desperately seeking one of the film's heroes.” Apparently Kirk will spend most of the movie as some sort of space cadet and “the movie shows how the whole original series crew came together.” Locations stretch “from Earth to Vulcan, and yes, it does find a way to have Nimoy appearing in scenes with at least one of the actors on our cover — and maybe both.”
For anyone hoping for at least a little Trek familiarity, the new Trek team promises the cannon revisionism will start from the opening sequence, “emotionally wrenching passage that culminates with a mythic climax sure to leave zealots howling ''Heresy!'” Says co-producer Damon Lindelof, “''The movie, is about the act of changing what you know.''
