We have seen all sorts of dystopian, post-apocalyptic futures on film over the years. Some of these involve zombies, while others involve roaming bands of raiders. However, few of these films have ever combined biker cannibals, synthesizer music, and Keanu Reeves as a charismatic madman. That is exactly what Ana Lily Amirpour's The Bad Batch intends to do, and the trailer for the upcoming film is one of the most insane things that you will see all day as Jason Momoa and Suki Waterhouse fight for survival in a stylish Texas wasteland. I know, right? The preview for The Bad Batch presents us with a truly bizarre film that becomes even weirder once you dive into the core premise. After all, The Bad Batch is a romance set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic version of Texas. The film centers on Miami Man (Jason Momoa) and Arlen (Suki Waterhouse) as they try to survive in a world populated by cannibals, weirdos, and cult members led by Keanu Reeves' The Dream. If you've been bored by recent cinematic outings, then The Bad Batch (for better or for worse) is guaranteed to shake things up.
Of course, arguably the most interesting aspect of this entire trailer is the inclusion of Keanu Reeves as The Dream. It is an interesting change for the action star, and he is playing against type as a Jim Jones-esque cult leader. The actor is on a notable hot streak with the recent release of John Wick: Chapter 2, so all eyes are on him to genuinely reinvent himself once again with this performance in The Bad Batch.
That trailer for The Bad Batch is selling a tone and an overarching premise more than it is selling a linear narrative, and that is quite refreshing. Most trailers have a nasty habit of giving us way too much information right off the bat, but this one seems to leave most of the film's secrets intact. The Bad Batch does not look like it will be everyone's cup of tea, but I am currently all in on its bizarrely stylish and violent premise. It is hard to tell with such minimal amounts of footage shown, but the film seems to take ample inspiration from Drive's Nicolas Winding Refn in the way it combines genuinely beautiful cinematography, a synth-based musical score, and an outlandishly dark side of humanity into something elegant and off-kilter. I don't know about you, but I'm going to see this thing.
