The Weinstein Company Buys Stake In Starz Media

For all the well-documented financial struggles it's undergone, the Weinstein Company generally operates like the proverbial shark-- always moving forward. The brothers have already agreed to team up with their old company Miramax (now owned by a conglomerate of investors) to participate in a bunch of sure-to-be-blasphemous sequels to their previous hits, now they've entered in a partnership with Starz Media, taking a 25% stake in the studio.

According to the press release the deal encompasses home entertainment and digital distribution, and will provide Starz subsidiary Anchor Bay the rights to distribute on Blu-Ray and DVD up to 20 Weinstein movies per year, which includes this year's efforts like The King's Speech and Blue Valentine. The movies will also show up on the Starz network, of course, which may also include the Starz Play option on Netflix Watch Instantly.

After winning their battle against the MPAA over Blue Valentine's NC-17 ratiing and well in the heat of the Oscar race with The King's Speech, the Weinsteins, improbably, seem to be back on top again. The partnership with Starz won't exactly be a splashy moneymaker for them, but it does indicate that the brothers, as ever, are moving onward and upward. And maybe bringing The King's Speech to your Netflix queue sooner than you expected.
