Remember Cabin Fever? Back before Eli Roth was caving in Nazi skulls with a baseball bat, he made a little horror flick about a flesh-eating virus chowing on pretty people in the woods. It was a fun little gorefest that had many tongues wagging that Eli was to be the Next Big Thing in horror. Then he went on to create the Hostel movies, an act for which I owe him a swift kick in the crotch. But my disdain for torture porn aside, Cabin Fever wasn't a bad flick for what it was. If nothing else it gave us a memorably wince-inducing scene where a woman unwittingly shaved the skin off her legs. She should be glad she wasn't going Brazilian.
Both the original and Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever are coming to Blu-ray on February 16th from Lionsgate. "Cabin Fever 2?" I hear you ask. "I didn't know they made a sequel." You and me both, brother. Not terribly surprising, mind you, since the horror genre never met a concept it didn't want to franchise. Spring Fever takes the whole "flesh-eating virus" thing out of the woods and into the prom after infected water makes its way through a bottling plant and into a local high school. Roth isn't behind the camera this time, instead making way for up-and-coming horror director Ti West, whose buzzed-about House of the Devil hits DVD February 2nd.
Cabin Fever will debut on Blu-ray with a previously unseen director's cut and will include a new commentary with Roth and the cast, a "Beneath The Skin: The Making of Cabin Fever" featurette, and what the press release cryptically refers to as "more." Not a bad deal for $19.99. Meanwhile the sequel will include an unrated version of the film, a "Making of Gore" featurette, a "Prom Blows Gore Reel," and a digital-download copy. It'll run you a bit more, listing at $26.98. Make them a slightly late Valentine's Day gift for that special someone in your life.
