Joe Carnahan Planning A Smokin Aces DVD Prequel!

The parade of direct-to-DVD sequels continues. This one though, might actually be great, because the guy who made the theatrical version is involved with the DVD followup as well.

Our friend Richard over at Film Stalker says that director Joe Carnahan wants to do a prequel to his crime movie Smokin’ Aces, and he’s doing it direct-to-DVD. Carnahan says, “Whatever reluctance I have is alleviated by the fact that we canreally do this balls out, hardcore prequel and not be constrained by ratings or any other puritanical MPAA bullsh*t. That I love.”

So what we may be looking at here isn’t just a prequel directed by Carnahan, but a completely unrated prequel. This could be cool.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If direct-to-DVD was used more often for projects like this, and less for lame American Pie cash-ins, then it might be worth something. As long as DVDs have been around, it’s like we still haven’t properly explored the format. Why aren’t more directors doing things like this? Sure, the budgets are smaller but they’re also given more creative freedom to really do whatever the heck they want. If we have to have direct-to-DVD, let’s use it to give filmmakers a new, creatively unfettered way to express themselves. More Joe Carnahan, less Eugene Levy.
