Metal Gear Movie Actually Being Made

Rumblings of a Metal Gear Solid film have been bubbling under the surface for a few years now. The film had a director, then it didn't. It had another director, then it didn't. It was going to be made, then it wasn't. Well, now it looks more likely than ever that a MGS film is coming down the pipeline, as series creator Hideo Kojima announced a partnership with Columbia Pitctures during the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event in Japan.

The report comes directly from Famitsu, who attended the event. That link won't prove too useful if you don't read Japanese, but at least you can see a few pictures from the event. Images speak something of a universal language.

The Metal Gear series began life on the original Nintendo Entertainment System 25 years ago. Since then, the series has spawned about a dozen games, ranging in platforms for the PlayStation home console family, Gamecube and Xbox 360, to the PlayStation Portable and Game Boy Advanced. Over the years, the MGS series has been highlighted as one of the most movie-like games on the market, partially because of its always-strong cast of characters, complex (and usually very confusing) narrative and distinct James Bond meets Escape From New York slant. It could also be because of the series' epic cutscenes, including one in Metal Gear Solid 4 that lasts nearly two hours.

Currently, the only known factor is that Kojima-san will be working on the project in some capacity, as well as producer Avi Arad, best known for being attached to superhero films like Spider-Man.

I say we skip past all of the nonsense and just put Snake into the next Avengers movie. Who's with me?
