Captain Jack Sparrow To Return?

Notice how, just a few months ago, there was talk about sequels to just about every major franchise in existence? Everyone was willing to talk about sequels as their films’ next chapter was headed for theaters, but very few franchises kept that talk going after their films hit screens, especially as a few series put in disappointing showings this summer.

Among the disappointing was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, the third chapter in the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. At the time the movie was headed for screens, several people were talking about continuing the franchise. Surprisingly among them was Johnny Depp, who is well known for not wanting to revisit characters. The talk was that At World’s End would finish up the current storylines and that, if the franchise continued, it would be a new trilogy that would leave behind most of the characters, except, of course, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Well, now the At World’s End DVD is about to come out, so talk about Pirates has renewed. In an online press junket (reported on by Movieweb), director Gore Verbinski talked about the possible future of the franchise, stating, I think the trilogy is now complete. All of the stories set in motion by the first film have been resolved. If there ever were another Pirates of the Caribbean film, I would start fresh and focus on the further adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow.”

Basically, this is exactly the same stance we had months ago. There’s no guarantee that Pirates will continue, and if it does it will leave behind Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan and pursue Jack Sparrow on another adventure.

Do we want another Pirates adventure? I loved the first two films, but At World’s End was a disappointment. Was it because they rushed the sequel into production to strike while the proverbial fire was hot? The Dead Man’s Chest DVD extras hinted that the writing schedule was rough, with production already underway as the writers were crafting the script. This would explain why they had no idea what to do with great devices like the Kraken, simply killing it offscreen. Or was the problem that Verbinski and writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio simply ran out of ideas? If that’s the case, we don’t need more Pirates movies.

How about you? Do you want to see another adventure for Captain Jack Sparrow?
