Director Divorces Chuck And Larry

Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin has decided to legally separate from Universal’s same-sex comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

According to Variety, Dobkin dropped out on Wednesday, citing huge creative differences. The movie stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James as two straight firefighters who pose as a gay married couple for insurance purposes. The movie sounds horrific, and after the success of Wedding Crashers, he should keep the winning streak going for as long as possible.

Alexander Payne and James Taylor wrote the script, and the studio is rushing to find a new director to keep the film on track for an August launch. While many Sandler movies make good money at the bank regardless of their quality, this one just sounds like a terrible idea masquerading as a clever one. The casting of the world’s least funny buffoon, Kevin James, just makes matters worse.

Gay marriage is a hot button issue surrounded by a lot of deserved sensitivity, and it’s hard to find the humor in two goofy straight guys trying to exploit it for money. Just because a movie has a gay storyline doesn’t mean it will be any good (Read: Imagine Me And You.) They can’t all be Brokeback Mountain.

Congrats David, on a wise project abandonment.
