Godzilla Set Photo Features Star From The 1954 Original

Godzilla Akira Takarada

Back in 1954 Japanese actor Akira Takarada made his feature film debut in a little monster movie known as Godzilla, as diver Hideto Ogata. And now it seems that he's ready to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the great lizard by making an appearance in the upcoming reboot.

Earlier today Legendary Pictures revealed on Twitter that Takarada has arrived on the set of the new movie, posting the image you see above (which also features director Gareth Edwards) along with the message, "Special photo from the #Godzilla set. Thanks to all the Godzilla fans for your support." While it's entirely possible that the actor, who actually ended up appearing in six different Godzilla movies over the years, is just visiting the set for fun, speculation has run rampant that he will have a cameo appearance in the film as well. Obviously, there isn't much evidence to go on right now, and if he is indeed playing a role what that role is remains a mystery.

Officially announced at San Diego Comic Con last year, the new Godzilla film began production up in Vancouver, Canada last week. The film has an all-star cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston. While there is no plot synopsis available at this time, a set video has revealed that at the very least part of the story will be set in Japan, and it's been confirmed that the movie will feature two new monsters unseen in previous sequels.

The film will be in theaters on May 15, 2014.
