It's hard to know which rumors we're seeing more of these days: Star Wars or Marvel movies. Both are massive, multi-film properties over at Disney, and both have a ton of pre-existing characters who fans want to see come to life on the screen. Plus, with both franchises still in very early stages, there's enough room to speculate on just about anything. We may be seeing these movies for the next 50 years, so sure, theoretically at some point a Jar-Jar Binks spinoff may really happen.
But right now we're talking Marvel, and specifically the rumors dropped earlier this month that after Avengers 2, Hulk would be launched into space for a spinoff film based on the Planet Hulk storyline from the comics. Given how far off in the future that would be, it was safe to assume the idea was in early development if at all-- but now Aint It Cool says it's not in development at all. We're dealing with a "he said, he said" battle between two different sites with different sources, but Ain't It Cool says Latino Review's original scoop is "1,000% inaccurate"-- mostly because Marvel wants more Ruffalo and less Hulk.
Ruffalo's performance as Bruce Banner and The Hulk in The Avengers was nearly as widely praised as the CGI artistry that created the green guy, and it makes sense that Marvel would want to put more emphasis on the duality of the character, rather than a standalone story that has Banner in Hulk mode most of the time. That's not to say some Planet Hulk elements could work their way into a later story-- again, it's early days on all of this. But if Ain't It Cool's two sources have it right, the full Planet Hulk comic arc probably won't be making its way to the screen-- and given how much most of us liked Ruffalo's performance, we can all be at least somewhat happy about that.
