Dean Devlin, a writer and producer on the film, posted a photo to Instagram of himself standing next to Goldblum on the set of Independence Day 2. "Hanging with David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) 20 years later is a dream come true," he wrote along with the selfie.
Goldblum reprises his famous role from the first film as the MIT grad and environmentalist. He was the main protagonist of the 1996 film, which saw hostile aliens invading the Earth. Levinson was able to pick up on satellite signals, which he deduced to be a countdown for the attack. These creatures have had ample time to update their systems, so hopefully he’s also abreast of all the latest alien technology. Though we're sure 20th Century Fox and Emmerich are trying to keep our first look at the new aliens under wraps for as long as possible, perhaps Levinson won't have direct contact with them this time around. There's a new crop of younger and more agile people stepping up to handle this global threat, though the man has seen a thing or two.
In addition to Goldblum, other veteran cast members returning for Independence Day 2 are Bill Pullman as the President of the United States (or, in this case, former POTUS), Vivica A. Fox as stripper love interest Jasmine Dubrow, Judd Hirsch as Julius Levinson, and Brent Spiner as Dr. Brackish Okun. The newcomers who’ve come in to round out the cast are The Hunger Games’ Liam Hemsworth, Nymphomaniac’s Charlotte Gainsbourg, When the Game Stands Tall’s Jessie Usher, Men, Women & Children’s Travis Tope, White House Down’s Joey King, It Follow’s Maika Monroe and Gone Girl’s Sela Ward.
Fox released this official plot synopsis for ID2 when the principal cast was announced:
Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth, anticipating the invaders’ return, have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Independence Day 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on June 24, 2016.
