Man Of Steel 2 Could Hand The Director's Job Over To This Legend

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t just one movie. It is the springboard that is going to lead to several new movies. We know that Warner Bros. and DC plan to do a two-part Justice League movie in the wake of Snyder’s DOJ (with the rumors being that Snyder would direct those, as well). And there has been talk that Ben Affleck could be locked up for a trilogy of Dark Knight films that would follow his first tussle with Superman. But what of the Blue Boy Scout, himself? When will he get another solo movie?

If Jon Schnepp is to be believed, it will happen soon… and it will be directed by Mad Max: Fury Road helmer George Miller! Schnepp appeared on the Popcorn Talk podcast and discussed, briefly, news that he has been told that Miller will direct Man of Steel 2 for the studio that allowed him the chance to bring Max back to life. This is a rumor that has been floating around for some time now, only no one will go on record to proclaim it as fact But the more that it gets repeated on podcasts and in stories, the more you wonder if there’s validity to the scoop.

For so many reasons, it makes sense that George Miller would want to helm a Superman movie. As many of you probably know, Miller was primed to direct a Justice League movie for Warner Bros. back in 2008, but had to scrap his plans – and his cast – when the Writers Guild strike halted its progress and tax breaks the production counted on fell through. But Miller has gone on record numerous times to talk about plans that he has for the Man of Steel (and the rest of the JLA), so giving him another opportunity to bring this classic superhero to the big screen seems like a no-brainer.

Also, George Miller’s in the enviable position of having made Warner Bros. a decent amount of money this summer with Mad Max: Fury Road. While the production was hellish, the reception for the first Mad Max movie in decades was phenomenal, and the movie so far has grossed an estimated $375 million internationally. There has been talk that Miller might make another Max movie, or even a Furiosa film with Charlize Theron. But if WB wants him in the Superman gig, could that deter his plans?

Now, before you go buying tickets for Man of Steel 2, noted scooper Umberto Gonzalez tweets that the George Miller rumor is just that – a rumor. And he claims that Jon Schnepp is just repeating a rumor that Gonzalez told him weeks ago, but there hasn’t been any movement on it:

That doesn’t mean things haven’t changed behind the scenes, though. In fact, Mayimbe now writes that the two sides are negotiating over budgets, so there appears to have been some movement. Warner Bros. has been stating, on record, that Snyder’s Batman v Superman is fantastic, and they are going to want to ramp up production on follow up films almost immediately. At the moment, there isn’t a release date for Man of Steel 2 on DC’s announced calendar, though there are tentative dates in place for movies that introduce The Flash, Aquaman and the Green Lantern Corp. Could one of them move to accommodate a George Miller-directed Man of Steel 2? You better believe it.
