Matthew McConaughey Walks On Distant Planets For New Interstellar Poster

Interstellar Poster

Few films have generated more interest than Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the filmmaker’s first feature since departing from the Batman universe. Fewer films have been more shrouded in secrecy, too, but today we at least get to take a look at the newest poster for upcoming sci-fi epic.

Empire scored the exclusive reveal of the newest one sheet, which features star Matthew McConaughey geared up in his spacesuit while walking across an icy and inhospitable landscape. The image was featured in a previous Empire piece on the film, and Nolan liked it so much he decided to turn it into a poster.

While it feels like we get almost minute-by-minute updates on everything happening on the sets of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Star Wars: Episode VII, Nolan has managed to keep things very quiet with Interstellar. We’re roughly two months away from the film’s release date, and we still aren’t even entirely sure what the film is about. Those are CIA levels of secrecy in the Internet age.

What we have gathered is that McConaughey and his crew are sent on a space mission to find a new home for humanity as Earth slowly dies. Presumably, this is a planet he winds up on. We have no clue if this is the potential new Earth, or one of several planets the space team visits during the course of the film, but if this is one of the final contenders humanity could be in for a rough ride.

Beyond that, we can still only guess as to what might actually happen during Interstellar. Alien encounters (at least in the traditional big budget action movie sense) seem unlikely, but maybe Nolan will surprise us. I will admit that the icy locale of the poster has me envisioning something along the lines of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, but that’s probably just me projecting and lamenting the fact that Guillermo Del Toro still hasn’t gotten to make his version of that twisted tale.

Whatever happens narratively in Interstellar, I’m willing to bet that it will be interesting -- and that Nolan’s legion of hardcore fans will eat it up. The film has an A-list cast, featuring not only McConaughey, but also Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Topher Grace, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, Michael Caine, and John Lithgow, to go along with its A-list director. Given all that star power, and Nolan’s track record, it’s hard to imagine this feature being anything less than a success. We’ll find out just how good Interstellar really is on November 7th.
