Monday Movie Memo: Could Sam Raimi And Tobey Maguire Save Spider-Man?

Over the weekend, huge -- and potentially sad -- news regarding the current Spider-Man franchise dropped, as producer and screenwriter Roberto Orci revealed that he didn't know the plans for the franchise. "I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie," Orci told the press.

Wait. I thought that we KNEW when they wanted each movie. At least, we have been reporting that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was down for June 10, 2016, and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 was down for May 4, 2018. There also have been plans for a Sinister Six movie, and a Venom spinoff.

Some fans, however, are asking for a different change... a return to the hero's roots. And we talk about that in today's Monday Movie Memo.

Sam Raimi Spider-Man

Could Sam Raimi return to the superhero franchise that he launched so many years ago? Is a 39-year-old Tobey Maguire the cure for what currently ails the Spider-Man franchise? Is ti time for yet another reboot?

As far as we knew, Sony had massive plans for a sprawling Spider-Man universe. Roberto Orci’s comments suggest that the faith in that franchise has wavered. Or, it’s possible that Orci just has his mind on Star Trek 3, which he will direct.

For now, however, the future dates no longer feel like they are set in stone, and the direction of the series seems uncertain… which wasn’t the case before the launch of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So tell us: what could happen in the future that would get you back in Spider-Man’s camp? Is it a continuation of Marc Webb’s world? A return of Raimi and Maguire? Or something entirely different? Weigh in through the comments section below.
