More Hustle As Chi Flows

Kung Fu Hustle was one of my favorite films last year. While it’s not exactly an Oscar-caliber drama, it’s the type of movie you can throw in at any time and get a few laughs out of, and sometimes I like those more then any movie Oscar decides to grace.

Rumors have been flowing about a sequel to the Kung Fu comedy since the middle of last year and, although creator/director Stephen Chow has been mostly silent on the issue, it would appear the sequel is moving forward.

MonkeyPeaches is running a quote by Yue Qiu, the landlady of Kung Fu Hustle who told a Chinese newspaper the sequel would begin shooting as soon as July. While there’s no confirmation, Moviehole is also indicating the movie would be tied in with a television series spin off of some sort. Both sites are reporting that the rumored next project of Chow, in which he plays an astronaut helping an alien kid, have been debunked.

I’m not sure how I feel about a sequel to Kung Fu Hustle. The first one was hilarious, but I’m not sure if they could recreate that in a follow up film. I’d rather see Chow go on to other projects (like getting an accurate version of Shaolin Soccer brought to the United States) then stay in that one film. Much like The Matrix, once your character realizes he has infinite power, where is there really to go?
