More Street Fighter Movies May Be On The Way

There has yet to be a really and truly great video game movie. Max Payne was just the latest example of why some stories are better when you're the one shooting the gun, and yet, that isn't stopping studio heads from putting down their Xbox controllers long enough to greenlight yet another adaptation of a video game that will probably suck all of the fun out of it.

Hyde Park Entertainment's CEO Ashok Amritraj is all excited about his company's adaptation of the classic video game Street Fighter, an origin story to be titled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. He talked to Collider in an extensive interview this week, and let loose that, if Chun Li is a hit, even more Street Fighter movies will most definitely follow.

"If it works we hope to do Ken and Ryu and so on. But we would do Chun Li and then we’d have Bison and Vega and you know some of the Balrog and all that," Amritraj explained. Having not played Street Fighter since hanging out at Mr. Gatti's pizza place in the mid-90s, I'm assuming those names mean something to some of you. And then are two more big names who would be getting their own movies sooner than later. "I would like to do the Ryu and Ken stories. Again everything is always tied of the performance."

I'll believe that everything in a video game movie is tied to the performance when I see a video game movie with half-decent acting, And I've learned by now that there are pretty much no studio heads who will say they aren't imagining some kind of franchise for whatever movie they're working on. So there's still no real way of knowing whether Chun Li will be any good, and if Ken or Ryu will ever get their chance.
