Ron Howard's In The Heart Of The Sea Trailer Promises An Epic Voyage

Every once in a while, Thor has to put down his hammer, and pick up a harpoon.

Chris Hemsworth will lead a team of sailors on an expedition across the ocean for Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea. The ocean-faring adventure looks like your usual, run-of-the-mill drama of grizzled men surviving on a boat. But then things take a dastardly turn when Howard introduces the term "Moby Dick" – and the above trailer, shared by Warner Bros., becomes a whale of a tale.

Get it?

Based on a true story of epic heroism, Ron Howard’s In The Heart of the Sea casts Chris Hemsworth as Owen Chase, the veteran first mate of the whaling ship Essex, which encountered a massive whale in the winter of 1820. Their story of survival would eventually inspire the author Herman Melville to pen the seminal book Moby Dick. Which explains why THIS massive tail is sticking out of the water, ready to crash down on the men in the sea.

Chris Hemsworth and Ron Howard are developing a solid working relationship, having collaborated on the Formula-1 drama Rush. This film, however, seems to paint on a far more epic canvas, shooting the majority of its scenes at sea (never easy) and trying to incorporate a whale as a character. I can’t imagine the difficulty Howard and his team faced trying to perfect their effects to bring In The Heart of the Sea to life. But then they hit their mark, it led to breathtaking shots like this:

Because as the official synopsis explains:

Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down."

In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw as novelist Herman Melville. It will be in theaters on March 13, 2015.
