Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver Confirmed For The Avengers 2?

Very interesting. Remember that rumor dropped by Joss Whedon recently that a brother-sister team might be infiltrating The Avengers in time for the sequel? And we speculated, at the time, that he might be referring to Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, characters who have been part of the team’s history?

Well, we were right.

EW.com, in their cover story on Iron Man 3, confirms the rumor that Whedon will work Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver into his anticipated sequel. The mag quotes a source, though they also include a Whedon quote where he basically says, “The draft could change six months from now.”

The characters, twin siblings, have a rich history in Marvel’s universe. Raised by gypsies, the two actually crossed paths with Magneto in the comic books, opening the door to a bevy of potential rumors that could somehow find the Avengers series crossing over with Fox’s X-Men franchise. In the Avengers books, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch fought alongside Captain America and Hawkeye as members of the team. But they also have had adventures that put them in touch with The Fantastic Four and several mutants from the X-Men universe.

More than anything, this introduces the concept of mutants to the Marvel world … a breed of hero that had been limited to the X-Men world up until this point. Add Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to a growing line of possible Avengers who could be part of the team in The Avengers 2, with Hank Pym’s Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy also in contention for supporting roles when the team gets back together in 2015. As Whedon says, the draft could change. But for now, it sounds like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are in. Are you excited?
