The Smurfs was one of the worst movies of 2011, but you wouldn't know if by looking at its box office numbers. Despite the fact that it opened in second place its opening weekend - behind Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens, it proved to not only have legs in the United States (ending up with a total of $142 million on a $110 million budget) but was an epic success abroad, making over $400 million. The sequel was immediately greenlit (no big surprise there) and now, as we march closer and closer to 2013, we have the film's first trailer.

The preview premiered over on the movie's official website, www.SmurfHappens.com, but you can also watch it below.

Directed by Raja Gosnell, the same director as the first movie, and featuring returning talents like Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Anton Yelchin, Katy Perry, George Lopez, Jayma Mays, Jonathan Winters and more, the sequel once again sees the evil Gargamel doing his very best to once again destroy the Smurfs. This time around his plan is to create two evil Smurfs - called The Naughties - and have them kidnap Smurfette and turn her bad. The Naughties, Vexy and Hackus, will be voiced by franchise-newcomers Christina Ricci and J.B. Smoove, respectively. The movie is being produced by Sony Pictures Animation, which is set to release it on July 31, 2013 (where it will go up against fellow sequels 300: Rise of an Empire and Red 2).
