Thor: The Dark World Producer Reveals New Villains

Empire has a splashy new story about Thor: The Dark World in its latest issue, and though it's par for the course, for there not to be too many details out there this early in the game, it has revealed a bit for the hardcore fans. We already knew that Thor would be facing off against the malevolent race The Dark Elves, but speaking to the magazine Executive Producer Craig Kyle has confirmed that there's an entire other gang of bad guys to handle-- and all of that on top of Thor's always-meddlesome brother, Loki.

The article isn't online yet, but Comic Book Movie picked up a copy of the print edition, and shares that Empire wrote that the film will take place a year after the events of The Avengers, with the world of Asgard beset by a group called "The Marauders." It seems the Dark Elves, who will be led by Christopher Eccelston's character Malekith, will take advantage of Asgard's weakened state to return and take their revenge. Talking in the predictable vague terms, Kyle hinted a bit at the high stakes of this kind of story:

“Like in Indiana Jones, while there's high stakes and high danger, there's always fun. We have to constantly redefine what a superhero film is or it'd just exhaust the audience. So Iron Man is the James Bond-y, classic, suave action hero; Captain America's the period piece; Hulk is the monster movie; Avengers the disaster movie; and Thor is the science-fiction epic.”

With Game of Thrones veteran Alan Taylor on board, it shouldn't be hard for him to set up this clash between rival cultures and give it all an epic scale. I'm hoping he doesn't lose some of the endearing humor from the Kenneth Branagh Thor, but I have a feeling that hardcore Marvel fans would take the more intense action any day.

Thor: The Dark World comes to theaters November 8 this year, and you can click here to learn everything else we know about it.
