Will Tropic Thunder Come True?

It's hard to repeat the success and witty spark of Ocean's Eleven, -- two sequels proved that well enough-- but Get Smart Peter Segal figures it's worth a shot anyway. He's signed on to direct the action-comedy pitch Wardogs, and The Hollywood Reporter quotes producer Andrew Lazar as calling it “an action ensemble comedy in the vein of Ocean's Eleven, where the casting becomes an event."

So.... an action movie featuring a bunch of stars that, based on the title, revolves around a war? Doesn't this sound an awful lot like the movie they're shooting in Tropic Thunder? I don't want to jinx anything, but if they hire an inexperienced British director and a redneck pyrotechnics expert, it might be best to stay far, far away from this set. Seriously, I'm a little skeptical about this concept, if only because they seem to be selling it based on a bunch of famous actors who have yet to sign on to be part of the movie. A movie can be one thing when it features George Clooney and Brad Pitt palling around onscreen, but when you replaced them with Dane Cook and Justin Long?

Segal proved he can work with a big budget with Get Smart this summer, and he's directed Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy and even the Farley-Spade duo of the '90s in the past. So hey, maybe he really can bring in all these stars the producers are promising. But when you start talking about something being in the vein of Ocean's Eleven, that's basically saying you'll be a paler imitation of a movie that was miraculously good to begin with. But hey, if things go in the Tropic Thunder direction, at least it'll be a disaster worth watching.
