Two More Suicide Squad Characters May Get Spinoff Films

Following the disappointing response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. is putting even more pressure on Suicide Squad. The good news is that Warner Bros. appears to have a lot more confidence going into David Ayer’s super-villan team up than they necessarily had for Batman and Superman. There’s already word that the studio is starting work on a possible spinoff vehicle for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Now, it looks like the future of the Joker and Captain Boomerang may be heading in a similar direction.

While it’s only a rumor at this point, We Got This Covered has a source claiming that Warner Bros is so convinced that Suicide Squad is going to be a hit that they’re considering the future of all the characters, specifically those played by Jared Leto and Jai Courtney. While the source is unnamed -- and there’s no indication of how they’d be in a position to know, so we have to take it all with a grain of salt, regardless of how accurate it may be -- if this is true, then we can expect Leto back in character before too long and sending terrible gifts to people. Says the source:

I’ve heard more than a few talks of giving some of the other Task Force X members their own spinoffs, and like the Harley Quinn one, these films would open the door for a ton of new DC characters to show up. The Joker is a definite possibility for a spinoff, and Jared [Leto] seems up for it from what I’ve been told. They’re also really hot on Jai Courtney’s character Boomerang right now. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but you’re definitely going to be seeing a lot more of these guys in the years to come.

The idea of a spinoff for The Joker is far from surprising. Jared Leto’s actions on the set of Suicide Squad have been the stuff of legend, and the buzz surrounding his character has been off the charts. Many fans will likely be drawn to the film simply to see how that particular performance turned out. If Leto is as bizarre as we’ve been led to believe, then we’ll likely want to see more of him, although a Joker-led movie would certainly be a first.

If there’s an interesting part of this news, it's Warner Bros’ apparent interest in Captain Boomerang. Boomerang certainly doesn’t have the cache that The Joker and Harley Quinn have. There’s a decent chance that even non-comic fans have heard of those two, but Boomerang, not so much. To be fair, the source doesn’t technically say that Boomerang is looking at his own spinoff, only that the studio likes the character. Maybe this will only mean that he’ll be a more frequent supporting character. The one thing that appears to be true is that the Hollywood’s ongoing experiment to plaster Jai Courtney on everything isn’t quite over yet.

What do you think? Are you already excited for a Joker movie? Will Captain Boomerang finally be the role that makes Jai Courtney the action star that Hollywood demands? Let us know in the comments.
