In the last eight years, we've seen a tremendous number of actors sign on for their own particular role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and soon fans will be able to watch Sylvester Stallone do exactly that. Rumors swirled around earlier this year that the Creed star would be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, though there was no official word regarding the character the actor will play. That's still the case, but we do now know one very important thing: the role that Stallone will play is minimal in terms of screentime, but extremely vital as far as the larger context goes.
Saturday night saw Marvel Studios host its special presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, and it was after the panel and while speaking to CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell that writer/director James Gunn talked a bit about what to expect from Sylvester Stallone's part in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The filmmaker wouldn't reveal exactly who Stallone is playing in the live-action comic book movie universe, but he also added that he didn't exactly give Stallone a lightweight part that could just be ignored. Or as Gunn put it,__
That's obviously not much to go on, but that's just because Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is clearly playing its cards very close to the vest. Hell, the only reason we actually know that Sylvester Stallone is actually in the film is because he appeared in a single one-second shot of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 San Diego Comic-Con footage. And because the actor was seen not wearing any super significant/noticeable clothes or makeup, none of what we saw really provided any clue as to the nature of his role.
There have been rumors that he will be a member of the Ravagers, the team of space pirates led by Michael Rooker's Yondu in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, but obviously that has neither been confirmed nor denied just yet.
There are thousands upon thousands of potential roles that Sylvester Stallone could play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and exactly what he's doing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is easily one of the most exciting secrets that the blockbuster franchise is currently holding on to. It will probably be a while before we get any kind of real answer, but for now we can speculate as much as we want, and count down the days until the hotly anticipated feature arrives in theaters on May 5, 2017.
