Why Superman Looks So Angry In This Dawn Of Justice Behind-The-Scenes Photo

If there's a defining trait that we can give to the DCEU's take on Superman -- aside from ambivalent or mopey -- it's probably anger. If he's not sad frowning, then you better believe he's angry frowning- and Henry Cavill has got one mean frown. Cavill's Superman hasn't done too much smiling on screen yet, but he's got no shortage of scowls. Whether he's fighting Batman in a dystopian future or fighting Batman in a dystopian present, Superman doesn't have much reason to be cheery. Apparently, there wasn't much to be happy with on set either, as Cavill shares in a behind-the-scenes photo below.

Leave it to a big budget blockbuster to skimp on the craft services, am I right? Henry Cavill shared this behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram, showing himself in costume filming a piece of the title fight with Batman, and he does not look happy. Asides from using story context of Batman trying to kill him while his mother is in danger, Cavill jokes that he used real-life inspiration to get angry. Production wouldn't let him have his Salted Caramel Mochaccino with skinny coconut milk and whip, probably because he can't afford the calories to keep that Superman bod in shape.

Still, though, it's a cool photo showing off some of the practical stunt works and sets that were used in the film. While the fight between Superman and Batman was too brief to base an entire movie around, it still had lots of cool aspects, and it's nice to see a little peek into how they made it happen.

Superman's general attitude in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been a major point of criticism from fans who feel that the character is being misrepresented. Comic book Superman is certainly a figure to aspire to, but Cavill's Superman hasn't quite reached that point yet, still trying to decide if he should even bother saving people. While this aspect functions well for Zack Snyder's take on Superman, it'd be nice to see the character be a figure of hope too. Perhaps after Superman's brief spell of death is over, he'll have a new focus to match the brighter change of direction the DCEU seems to be heading in.

Superman may have sacrificed himself to take out Doomsday at the end of Batman v Superman, but the character will have a not so secret resurrection in the upcoming Justice League. How he'll come back to life and what his state of mind will be is unclear, but he'll more than likely join up with a newly formed Justice League in time to stop the invasion of Steppenwolf and his parademons.

You can next see Superman either frowning or smiling in Justice League, which hits theaters on November 17, 2017.
