Is Eddie Murphy Working On Coming To America 2?

Coming to America Eddie Murphy Arsenio Hall

It's hard not to look back at the '80s without realizing what a comic tour de force Eddie Murphy was. Not only did he have a number of successful stand-up specials (Delirious, anyone?) but his acting career really took off, starring in hits like Beverly Hills Cop, Trading Places, 48 Hrs., and Coming to America. So, it's easy to see why after a career of highs and lows, Murphy may be interested in returning to some of his work from that era, as new reports are claiming that Murphy is interested in working on a Coming to America sequel.

TMZ is reporting that Eddie Murphy is in the early stages of working on a script for Coming to America 2 -- which better not end up being called Coming 2 America. Earlier in the week, Murphy's Twitter account posted a tweet reading "Coming to America sequel?" with a picture of Coming to America star Vanessa Bell Calloway. The tweet and Murphy's whole account have since been deleted. After further investigation, TMZ learned that Murphy has a social media team writing his posts and he did not sanction the tweet. Apparently, there were plans for a post but it wasn't supposed to happen yet because Murphy is still writing.

So, some kind of plans for a Coming to America sequel are in the works, but we've still got a ways to go before anything official is stated. Coming to America is a 1988 comedy starring Murphy as Prince Akeem, the royal heir to the fictional African nation of Zamunda. Wanting to get married for love, Akeem rejects his arranged marriage and travels to the best place to find a suitable queen: Queens, New York. Coming to America was one of the first of his movies where Murphy contributed to the story and it's the first film in which Murphy underwent extensive make-up to play multiple characters -- something that would become a staple of his in later years (Norbit, The Nutty Professor).

It's been a while since Murphy tried to capture that same comic energy that made him a superstar in the first place. Originally known for his no-holds-barred style and language, Murphy eventually turned to doing more family-friendly films (Meet Dave, A Thousand Words, Imagine That) to the detriment of his appeal to some fans. Maybe returning to his golden years is what Murphy needs, and it's interesting to think that of all his films, Coming to America is the one he'd like to revisit.

There are no further details on what a Coming to America sequel would look like or who from the original cast would return. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated with more information as soon as it becomes available.
