When The Fast And Furious Franchise Is Ending, According To Neal Moritz

letty in Fast 9

If you are a Fast and Furious fan--and we know there are a lot of you out there--you may already know that the franchise is planning to make Fast 9 and Fast 10 (although the titles are currently undetermined), but recently Fate of the Furious producer Neal Moritz revealed a new detail about what is coming. Namely, he mentioned that there are currently only plans to do two more movies, so as to end at a point of the creative team's choosing. Here's his confirmation that Fast 10 is looking like it will be the last flick.

Yeah, the plan is to make two more movies.

Recently, The Fate of the Furious' Tyrese Gibson said that the Fast and Furious movies are still making money, and could potentially go on for as long as they continue to bring in boatloads of cash. But from what Neal Moritz said to Collider, the franchise's endgame is likely to happen while the movies are still making plenty of money. The big producer admitted that the ninth and 10th installments are already planned, and that there is a plan in place in regards to the creative direction of the franchise.

He also noted that writing a good story, and not just making money, is going to be key to getting to 10 and that there is a definite endpoint planned at this juncture,

Our plan is to go as quickly as we can under the idea that we gotta have a great story and be ready to go. And, honestly, we have some big themes and things we're talking about, we're just not there in terms of where exactly we're gonna go yet. We kind of have the ending point of the franchise, but we don't know the in-betweens yet.

The interview happened before The Fate of the Furious absolutely dominated the box office around the world, although it should be noted that domestically the movie sagged just a wee bit during its opening weekend. Still, it's safe to assume that money is not the motivation behind the endpoint. This franchise could go on seemingly indefinitely if it wished, which means the fact that the creative team has an end point in mind is probably a good thing, allow the franchise to go out on--theoretically--at least a somewhat high note rather than cashing those paychecks for the sake of cashing paychecks. Regardless, just because Dom, Letty, Roman and the gang might be done after 10, there's always the world of reboots out there that could make some cash.

The Fate of the Furious is currently still in theaters, but we shouldn't have too long to wait for the next installment. Fast 9 is currently schedule to drop on April 19, 2019 and a post from Vin Diesel a while back listed Fast 10 on April 2, 2021. For now, you can check out what flicks are coming with our upcoming movies guide.
