Donald Glover is keeping himself incredibly busy these days, from working on TV shows like FX's Atlanta and the upcoming Deadpool animated series to voicing Simba in the new Lion King movie. But in a little less than a year, he'll make his biggest blockbuster appearance yet as the younger Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo movie. Joining the Star Wars franchise is a big deal for any actor, but Glover has the privilege of playing a character who's already enjoyed decades of popularity thanks to Billy Dee Williams' portrayal. As for why so many people like Lando, Glover believes it's because of the character's enigmatic nature. As Glover sees it:
While speaking with Deadline about his current projects, the conversation inevitably turned to his upcoming turn as Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo movie. When the interviewer mentioned that Lando was his son's favorite Star Wars character, Glover noted that a lot of people feel the same way, and provided the above reasoning for why the infamous scoundrel is so beloved. While the Lando Calrissian we see next year still has a long ways to go before becoming the man who was the administrator of Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back and later a hero in Return of the Jedi, it sounds like he'll still have an intriguing air of mystery, which is just the way we like him.
As per usual with the Star Wars movies, Lucasfilm is keeping plot details for the Han Solo movie (the second of the Anthology spinoffs) close to the proverbial chest. All that's official right now is that it will follow Han Solo's formative years as a smuggler long before he became one of the Rebellion's greatest heroes. His adventuring will eventually lead him to cross paths with Lando Calrissian, who has been described as a "scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy's underworld." While we can presume that Han and Lando will strike up some kind of partnership given what little we know about their past together, Donald Glover's comment suggests that the eponymous protagonist would be wise to keep an eye on him. Lando may be the definition of "cool" in a galaxy far, far away, but that doesn't mean one should fall prey to his smooth talking so he can pull one over on them.
You can see Donald Glover's Lando Calrissian in action when the Han Solo movie blasts its way into theaters on May 25, 2018.
