How Pacific Rim 2 Has Improved The Jaegers, According To John Boyega

Pacific Rim

The road to a Pacific Rim sequel has been a long one, but the movie is on its way finally. Now, John Boyega has opened up about how the sequel will make improvements on the original. What people are really looking forward to in Pacific Rim: Uprising is some great action between the massive robot Jaegers and the Kaiju monsters. Boyega says that the new movie will see Jaegers significantly improved to move much faster, increasing the speed of the combat in a big way. According to the actor...

We've got better upgrades. The robots are moving much more swift. Yeah, we're like ballerinas up in there, it's fantastic.

By virtue of the fact that both the Jaegers and the Kaiju are both massive creatures, the fight scenes, while not slow, were certainly more deliberate than you might have been used to in your traditional action movie. It would seem, based on what John Boyega tells IGN, that this will change in Pacific Rim: Uprising. Upgrades to the Jaegers will make them faster and, apparently more graceful as well, if the comparison to ballerinas is an apt one.

Technically, the Jaegers just mimic the movements of the people controlling them, but we're not sure how a ballerina would be able to handle all of the equipment strapped to them inside a Jaeger. It might be a bit complicated to pull off graceful moves.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this. While I'm looking forward to Pacific Rim: Uprising, one of the reasons is that the first movie was so different compared to more traditional action movies. The fight scenes looked and felt unique. Faster moving Jaeger's feels like we're just transitioning to a more traditional choreographed fight style and it seems like that's losing a lot of what made Pacific Rim special.

Still, we haven't seen any of what John Boyega is talking about here, so I'll withhold judgment until I do. Hopefully, the sequel will be an even better experience than the original movie was. It's unlikely that everything about the action will change. As long as we still have giant robots picking up container ships and beating monsters over the head with them, we'll still have some great action.

We're sure the increased speed isn't the only Jaeger upgrade. Pacific Rim: Uprising will surely include lots of exciting new weapons and interesting new Kaiju designs which will also change up the action in ways that will make the sequel feel fresh rather than just a rehash of the original.

Pacific Rim: Uprising will see John Boyega as the son of Idris Elba's character from the first film. It's currently set for a March 23, 2018 release.
