Marvel properties are becoming much larger parts of Disney's theme parks around the world. That includes the Guardians of the Galaxy who are getting ready to get their second ride at a Disney park in the United States. It was previously announced at the recent D23 Expo, that a Guardians of the Galaxy themed ride would be added to the Epcot park at Walt Disney World, but at the time we didn't even know what sort of ride it would be. Now, we know that a Guardians roller coaster is on the way, and it will be a unique coaster experience.
On Sunday, Epcot celebrated its 35th anniversary at Walt Disney World. During the celebration, it was confirmed by Vice President of Epcot, Melissa Valiquette (via Inside the Magic) that the ride will, in fact, be a roller coaster, the first one to ever be placed in Epcot, which is the only Disney park to never have a roller coaster. In addition, it was stated that the new coaster would have a "first of its kind" ride system. However, no details weren't provided regarding exactly what that means. The new Guardians coaster will replace the Universe of Energy which recently closed. That building will be used to house the entrance to the coaster, while a new 10-story building is being constructed next to it to house the coaster.
The Guardians of the Galaxy already have one ride in the US as Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission - Breakout opened at Disney's California Adventure earlier this year, replacing the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Now, it looks like they may get the second Disney Parks Marvel ride as well. While more Marvel-themed rides are expected at DCA, as part of a rumored new land dedicated to Marvel, nothing has been officially announced, and thus this ride will probably be built before anything else.
Disney Parks are in a state of perpetual upgrade, but they've been throwing a lot more money than usual at upgrading things in recent years. Both coasts are seeing new lands dedicated to Star Wars which will open in 2019. 2018 will see the opening of Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This year, in addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy Ride in California, Florida saw the opening of the World of Pandora, an Avatar-themed land, at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Epcot itself saw a Frozen ride added to the Norway pavilion last year, and has plans for a Ratatouille ride to be added to the French pavilion area.
My first thought is a coaster similar to the Rock n' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios, which is themed around the band Aerosmith, and thus plays the band's music in your ears while you race through it. Something like that makes sense as we'd expect that 1970s pop music will be a big part of this coaster. However, the unique ride system certainly adds an intriguing wrinkle. If it's truly a brand new concept then it's essentially impossible to guess what it could be.
At D23, it was stated that the new Guardians ride would be open in time for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World in 2021. It could be sooner, but with everything else going on we're not holding our breath.
