Why Brie Larson's Captain Marvel Suit Is Definitely Not What We Expected

Captain Marvel comics suit

Marvel Studios has thus far played Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel reasonably close to the chest, opting not to show us much in the lead-up to Brie Larson's first turn as Carol Danvers. However, that all changed with the newly-leaked set photos of Larson in her Captain Marvel outfit. It's an intriguing look for the character, and notably different from what we expected for one particular reason: it's decidedly greener than Captain Marvel's classic suit.

In total, seven photos leaked online courtesy of Page Six. They show Brie Larson standing in the middle of the street, wearing a variation of her classic Captain Marvel outfit. It's fairly faithful in terms of its overall design and construction (particularly with the star on the chest), but it's also very distinct from what many fans likely expected to see because it's almost entirely comprised of various shades of green. As many fans of Marvel Comics will attest: this is a significant departure, because Carol Danvers' outfit is typically depicted in shades of blue, red, and gold.

One thing worth noting is that this traditional outfit has already been highlighted for the film. In fact, ahead of a press screening for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that CinemaBlend attended last year, the folks behind Captain Marvel specifically teased a look for the character that harkened back to what most fans generally think of what they think of Carol Danvers. In simple terms, these set photos don't line up with what we've already seen.

The exact cause of the change for these set photos remains unclear. The leaked images are not official, which means that there could be some post-production work used to alter the appearance in some way. Additionally, it's entirely possible that this green iteration of the suit is a prototype that could eventually lead to the classic version of the suit -- not unlike how Iron Man showed us a silver version of Tony Stark's first suit before opting for the "hot rod" colors.

Of course, despite the concerns that some fans may have about this particular color palette for Carol Danvers' suit in Captain Marvel, it is worth noting there's a certain degree of precedent for this specific look in the Captain Marvel corner of the comic book lore. Specifically, the suit seen in Captain Marvel set photos seems to share some visual similarities to the original Kree suit worn by Mar-Vell (who will be played by Jude Law in Captain Marvel) in the comics.

Mar Vell Captain Marvel

That's the original Kree costume for Mar-Vell in Marvel Comics, and given the fact that Captain Marvel will reportedly take place in the 1990s and adapt elements of the Kree-Skrull War storyline, it makes a certain degree of sense to see that the film has dug deep into the source material for one of its suits. Granted, it doesn't explain why Carol isn't wearing her more well-known duds in this photo, but we will have to wait and see what happens as Captain Marvel continues to come together.

CinemaBlend will bring you more updates related to Captain Marvel and her upcoming debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as new details about the film become available to us. Captain Marvel is set to premiere on the big screen on March 8, 2019, and Carol Danvers is expected to join The Avengers roster when Avengers 4 premieres on May 4, 2019.

As for this year in Marvel movies, Black Panther will debut in theaters on February 16, and Avengers: Infinity War will premiere on May 4.
