Jason Momoa’s The Crow Reboot Finally Has A Release Date

Brandon Lee as The Crow

1994's The Crow remains a cult classic of the comic book movie genre, and while it was followed by three sequels (two of which were direct to video), over the last decade there have been numerous attempts to re-tell the story of Eric Draven on the big screen. Now the project is finally going forward, with Jason Momoa playing the eponymous protagonist. To prove it's serious about releasing The Crow reboot to the masses, Sony Pictures announced today that the movie has been scheduled for October 11, 2019.

While The Crow reboot has been ready to go a number of times over the years, only to be hit with one or more setbacks and be tossed back into development hell, this is the first time it's been assigned a release date. The new movie's competition that opening weekend will Be Warner Bros' The Goldfinch, Paramount Pictures' big screen adaptation of Are You Afraid of the Dark? and the animated Addams Family movie from MGM. Along with The Crow, Sony also announced (via THR) that it will release A Dog's Way Home on January 11, 2019 and Miss Bala on January 25, 2019.

Considering that The Crow is one of the lesser known comic book properties out there, Sony made a wise choice scheduling the reboot for October of next year rather than put it out as a summer or winter release. We've seen in recent years how larger-scale movies can be enormously successful outside of the traditional blockbuster seasons. Plus, considering The Crow's roots in horror, it makes all the more sense to release it a couple weeks before Halloween, as it will be one of several spooky offerings for moviegoers to choose from. That being said, release date changes are nothing new in the moviemaking world, so if The Crow experiences more setbacks behind the scenes, don't be surprised if Sony delays it to allow extra time to get things back in order.

Like the original Crow movie, the reboot is expected to be a faithful adaptation of the 1989 comic book written by James O'Barr. The story follows Eric Draven, who is resurrected from the dead and used his new abilities to avenge both his demise and the death of his fiancé, Shelly. Actors like Luke Evans and Jack Huston were previously attached to star in The Crow, but Jason Momoa scored the Eric Draven role in September of 2016. The Nun's Corin Hardy is still attached to direct, and with shooting expected to being later this year, hopefully we'll start learning soon what other actors will be joining Momoa on screen.
